How to Clean Soot From Kitchen Cabinets (June 23, 2009)

Anytime is a good time for a little spring cleaning (Springing into action, whether it's summer, winter, or fall!). Here's a few simple tips to help you clean soot off your kitchen cabinets.

Step 1

First, while wearing a dust mask or respirator (you don't really want to breathe this stuff in do you?), dry dust the cabinets. Use a vacuum cleaner and/or a particle trapping dust rag (swiffer makes a good one, but look at your local discount retailer). It's important to TRAP the particles rather than simply moving them from place to place. It may also be helpful to vacuum first and then go back over it with a rag to get any and all loose dust from the cabinet surfaces. Make sure that as much of the loose dust is removed before you attempt the next step or you will make a bigger mess than you started with.

Step 2

After all the loose dust and soot is removed from the cabinet surfaces, mix Pine Sol or other household cleaner of your choice in warm water (following manufactures directions). the best method is a two rag approach, one wet and one dry to catch drips and scrub the surface. Get the sooty surface wet and work in a small area, starting at the top and working down (so you're not fighting gravity drips).

Step 3

Get the section wet, scrubbing as necessary, then using the dry cloth to wipe away excess water. Repeat until all soot is removed.

Step 4

Let surfaces dry and assess the cleanliness. Repeat the wet method as often as necessary until it's as clean as you want it (or as clean as it will get)
