Selecting Paint for Kitchen Cabinets (May 18, 2009)

Type of Paint

Paint comes in a bewildering array of colors, styles and finishes. There are oil-based paints, latex paints and enamel paints, and all of those come in several different finishes, from high-gloss to matte.

Because kitchen cabinets get a lot of use (and sometimes abuse, if you have a toddler in the house), it is best to pick the paint that will give you the most durable cabinet surface. Oil-based paints have been used in the past, but today you can find latex paints made especially for kitchen cabinets. They are labeled 100 percent acrylic and will give your cabinets a highly durable, glassy surface.

Color of Paint

Dark woods are extremely popular, and for good reason. They impart a sophisticated feel to any kitchen, and hide a number of flaws. You can get that look by painting your cabinets a rich, chocolate brown. Dark colors, however, tend to make a kitchen look dreary and dim. If you want to brighten up your kitchen, consider painting your cabinets a glossy white color. Cream is also popular with homeowners who wish to give their kitchens a modern feel, while unusual colors such as lime and light blue add a modern touch to trendy kitchens.

When choosing a color, be sure to think about how it will look over your primer. Dark, rich colors may need more than one coat, so purchase accordingly.

Preparation and Primer

While choosing the right paint for your kitchen cabinets is important, it is equally important to prepare your cabinets properly before you paint them. Make sure to clean them thoroughly, removing any trace of grease or dirt. Hot water, soap, and a scrub brush will work if your cabinets are nominally dirty, but if you have years of grease accumulation, you will need to use a degreaser, available at any hardware store.

Make sure you sand down your cabinets with 100 grit sandpaper to make the paint stick to them. Fill in any holes as well with wood putty. Finally, apply a coat of wood primer to the cabinets and let dry before you add the first coat of paint.
