How to Make Simple Cheap Kitchen Cabinets (March 20, 2009)

Designing and building your own kitchen cabinets is a cheap way to give your kitchen that customized look. Building kitchen cabinets can be somewhat time consuming; however, building them is not hard by any means. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to make simple and cheap kitchen cabinets.

Measuring and Cutting the Wood for Cabinets

    Step1
Always follow the golden rule when measuring, which is measure twice, cut once. You may wish to experiment with a piece of scrap wood before you begin cutting on the actual wood you will be using for your cabinets. To ensure that the cuts will be accurate, use clamps on the straight edge of the wood, which will act as a guide.

    Step2
Set the blade on the saw so that it will cut a little deeper than the plywood. The cabinets will be 19 inches deep. Cut the sides of the cabinets so that it will be 18 1/4 inches. The base should be cut at 3/4 inch. When building the base for the cabinets, make it the same width as the cabinets.

    Step3
After framing and nailing the base together, nail the bottom of the cabinet to the base using wood glue and the 6D finishing nails, being sure to line it up correctly. You may wish to stabilize the unit by applying a few clamps to the base. Applying glue will provide additional strength to the unit.

    Glueing and Predrilling for Assembly

    Step1
After measuring and building the face frame, apply glue to the edges of both the plywood and face frame. Clamp the face frame into position being careful to align the edges before tightening the clamps. Proper alignment will eliminate the need for excessive sanding if the two do not line up correctly.

    Step2
Predrill the holes at the top, sides and bottom before attempting to secure the face frame to the unit. The predrilled holes will allow the finishing nails to penetrate the wood without bending. Use 6D finishing nails to attach the face frame to the unit.

    Step3
Finishing nails have no head, which allows them to be sunk into the wood. Be sure not to ding up the wood by hitting them too hard. You can cover the head of the nails with wood putty so that they will not be visible to the eye.

    Making the Cabinet Doors

    Step1
When cutting the wood for the door fronts, you will want to make them overlap the edges by 3/8 of an inch. The doors are made the same as the base and face frames. Using a table saw or jigsaw, cut additional wood panels to be inserted inside the frame. Again, you may wish to use a scrap piece of wood to ensure accuracy before cutting the actual piece you will use.

    Step2
Before attaching the doors to the unit, you will want to sand them with a medium grade sandpaper followed by a fine grade sandpaper. Fill in any holes with wood putty before sanding if you do not plan to stain the cabinets. If you do plan to stain, fill them in afterward. You will be able to match the color of the wood putty to the final finish of the cabinets. Saw dust and wood glue can be used to create your own wood putty; this will ensure a perfect match.

    Step3
Before applying any polyurethane, be sure to vacuum up any dust and wipe the cabinets down with a clean soft cloth. Apply a polyurethane finish (easily found at any hardware and home store) to help make the cabinets water resistant, which is highly recommended in a kitchen or bathroom.

Attaching the Cabinet Doors to the Frames

    Step1
Be sure to level the cabinet door and align it properly with the hinges.

    Step2
Attach the hinges to the door of the unit by screwing them into the doors with a power drill.

    Step3
Repeat for each of the cabinet doors until all hinges are in place.

    Installing the Cabinets

    Step1
Install the cabinets by determining that the position is correct with a level. A stud finder will help determine where the studs are in the wall.

    Step2
Mark the spots on the wall with a pencil.

    Step3
Predrill the holes in the wall where the cabinets will be attached. If the walls are not level, a shim can be used to align the cabinets so that they will hang straight.
