How to Stain Laminate Cabinets (July 13, 2010)How to Stain Laminate Cabinets If you're interested in making your laminate cabinets more intriguing and distinctive in appearance, one of the best ways to accomplish this task is by staining them a certain color. Staining your cabinets will give them a very unique appearance that sets them apart from most other types of different cabinets made out of laminate materials. If you plan to stain your laminate cabinets, however, it's important that you complete this process in the proper way. Failure to do so will result in a shoddy looking product that is not adequate to your needs or to the aesthetic that you've carefully planned out for the room that holds the cabinets. Read on for a step by step guide on how to stain your cabinets. Tools and Materials Needed:
Step 1 - Remove the Laminate CabinetsBefore you continue with the process of staining your laminate cabinets, you'll first need to gently and carefully remove them from the wall or the fixture that has held them previously. Depending upon the type of cabinet that you have and how it's attached to the wall, you'll need to either use a screwdriver or a power drill in order to unhinge it at the latches that connect it to the base of the cabinet. Keep any screws or other parts that connect the cabinet face to the base of the cabinet in a separate and safe place for reattachment later on. Step 2 - Stain the Cabinets Lay out the cabinets over a set of newspapers or scrap paper and prepare to stain them. Open up the laminate stain cans and check for instructions on how to stain the cabinets on the sides of the cans. In most cases, you'll simply need to coat a paintbrush in laminate stain and apply the stain coating evenly to the surface of the cabinet itself. However, you may need to dilute the stain in certain cases, so it's a good idea to check first. Be sure that you've set up the stain area in a well ventilated part of the house where there is plenty of space. Gently and evenly apply the stain to the surface of the laminate cabinet. The more evenly that you are able to apply the stain, the smoother and more professional the final appearance of the laminate will be. Allow the stain to dry. Step 3 - Repeat Coats and Lacquer the Cabinet If you wish to make the stain darker in color, simply add additional coats of stain to the surface. Be sure to allow these to dry as well. Otherwise, finish up with a coat of lacquer or polyurethane coating in order to preserve and seal off the stain on the cabinets. Other News:
